Carousel Takes Final Few Spins at Wheaton Park

With its 33 hand carved horses, three zebras and two chariots, the historic Ovid Hazen Wells Carousel will take its last spins in Wheaton Regional Park over the next two weekends. And there is still time to buy some tickets.

The beloved amusement ride was built in 1915 and operated on the National Mall just steps from the Smithsonian Castle from 1967 to 1981. Maryland-National Capital Parks and Planning Commission bought the merry go round in 1981 and brought it to Wheaton.

Now it is scheduled for another move – to Clarksburg this time. There it will be a highlight of the Ovid Hazen Wells Recreational Park. Montgomery Parks will install a new carousel in Wheaton Park in time for spring of 2025.

The Carousel will continue to turn weekends in October from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. So you can still take a ride until Sunday, October 27 for $3.50 a ticket. Children under 2 ride for free when accompanied by an adult.

Wheaton Regional Park is located at 2000 Shorefield Drive in Wheaton.
