Damascus recognizes the town’s 208 years with the annual “Celebrating Damascus” weekend featuring a parade, vendors and fireworks on Friday and Saturday.
The two-day celebration kicks off on Friday with a “summer fun” themed parade at 7 p.m., according to organizers. The parade will travel up Route 27 from Damascus High School to Lewis Dr. and end with a firework show at the Damascus Volunteer Fire Department Activities Ground.
The Volunteer Fire Department will sell food outside and serve fried chicken dinners in the air-conditioned activity hall from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The second day of the event will feature the fourth annual cruise-in car show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Care Auto Parts on 9930 Main St., with raffle prizes and sales.
Other community activities, food trucks and business vendors will fill the Damascus streets on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Volunteer Fire department will hold an open house and tours. The United Methodist Church Grounds will hold a Lion’s Club Community Flea Market from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., along with children’s activities, a moon bounce, and a performance from the Market Street Big Band from noon to 2 p.m. at the Pavillion.
The Heritage Museum will open on Saturday throughout the whole celebration.
County fair trams will provide free transportation around the town for Saturday.
The firework show will be scheduled to Saturday if it rains on the original date.
