Accidentally mixed chemicals created a medical emergency for six members of a building services crew at the Germantown campus of Montgomery College early Friday morning.
According to James Carpenter, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Assistant Chief, at about 12:30 p.m., multiple patients were examined due to inhalation of a respiratory irritant. The workers were in a building on Observation Drive.
No students were involved.
Fire and Rescue’s Hazmat team found that chemicals accidentally were mixed together. The fire rescue team worked to ventilate the building.
According to a spokesperson at Montgomery College, bleach and a floor-stripping agent were mixed together in a bucket.
Six adults were treated on the scene, and five were transported to the hospital for evaluation. None of those taken to the hospital had life threatening medical conditions.
