A “Rising Star Teacher of the Year” award is given to a teacher in the county who demonstrates a deep passion for teaching and is just beginning their career. This year, Amanda Hammersla, a fourth-grade teacher from Chevy Chase Elementary School was granted the commendable title.
According to MCPS, Hammersla held her students to a high standard and worked under a philosophy that students achieved the most progress when they were actively challenged and engaged. Her efforts of going above and beyond were recognized when she would transform simple class activities into interactive ones.
Hammersla was described as a believer in strong communication between students and their parents. In the classroom, students would lead parent conferences which allowed the child to express their strengths and challenges.
She was recognized as a teacher who encourages parent engagement in their child’s learning. MCPS says an app used in the classroom keeps parents updated on the curriculum and provides a newsletter full of pictures and descriptions of in-class activities from the week.
Hammersla’s colleagues consider her notably energetic and a source of inspiration for even those outside her class. She is involved in the school’s tutoring services, which offer help in math and reading, and teaches in the Typing Club.
Amanda Hammersla will be an honoree at the Champions for Children celebration in April.
