Clarksburg Man Sentenced for Sexual Offense During Graduation Party

Nelson Jones, 27, of Clarksburg was sentenced to one year in prison after a jury found him guilty in November of one count of third-degree sex offense in connection with a college graduation event in May of 2021.

Jones also was ordered to complete five years of probation upon his release. He will be registered as a sex offender for life.

According to court documents, Jones attended a college graduation celebration at the home of a family friend. The celebration continued into early morning hours, and a woman attending the gathering went into a bedroom alone to sleep. Jones entered the bedroom and sexually assaulted the woman. She awoke to him touching her, according to court documents.

The jury found Jones guilty of groping the victim’s breasts underneath her shirt. This was a re-trial. The case was originally tried in February 2023 but resulted in a hung jury.
