The Magruder High School boys basketball team (17-3) discovered who they were playing in the county championship game in a very unlikely way. On Zoom.
Five teams finished with the same record (16-4). Instead of traditional tiebreakers like head-to-head competition, MCPS conducted a coin flip Wednesday morning between Kennedy, Paint Branch, Whitman, and B-CC. Blake was not eligible because they are in the same state playoff region as Magruder.
According to Capitol Hoops, the coin flip, which was on a public zoom link featured four coins being flipped simultaneously. The process was that each person flipping coins represented a different school and the flips would continue indefinitely until one team had a different result than the other three. On the fifth flip, B-CC won when their coin landed tails while the other three coins landed heads.
B-CC will play Magruder at Richard Montgomery High School Friday at 5:30 p.m.
