Coming Soon to Public Libraries: Printing from Personal Phones

Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) announced upcoming improvements beginning next month.

“We’re making big improvements! Starting this December, we’re rolling out a series of updates to enhance your public computer and printing experience. Our current system is being replaced with a new, user-friendly software, and we’re upgrading our printers to offer better, more efficient service,” according to a press release from MCPL.

System Upgrade: Replacing Pharos with TBS software and upgrading printers for improved service.

Temporary Interruptions: Service disruptions at select locations from December 2–13.

Mobile Printing: Soon, you’ll be able to print directly from your personal devices.

Stay Updated: Follow MCPL on social media for updates and check their website for detailed schedules.

MCPL says they are upgrading their system to provide users with a smoother, more convenient printing and computer experience. Here’s a breakdown:

TBS Software: The new software offers a better user experience with features like language selection, session time, and printing balance on your library card.

Mobile Printing: Print directly from your smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop to our Konica printers—no need to be tied to a computer station.

New TBS Kiosks: 35 new kiosks being installed to help manage print jobs, scan, and copy with ease, located right next to the printers for convenience.

According to MCPL, this multi-phase project will modernize both our hardware and software. The new system will not only make printing and computer services easier but also set the stage for future enhancements. MCPL says they “aim to provide a seamless and efficient experience for all patrons.”

From Dec. 2–13, there will be service disruptions at various branches as the new system is implemented. “We’re working hard to minimize downtime, and you can access services at other locations during this time. Please check out our blog for complete schedule of services per branch,” per the release.
