Residents are encouraged to turn in their unwanted guns — no questions asked — in exchange for $100-$200 gift cards. The gun buyback event is 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, April 20 at the United Church of Christ of Seneca Valley at 13421 Clopper Road in Germantown.
It is part of an effort to reduce gun violence in the community, explained Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy, County Sheriff Max Uy, and Rev. Holly Jackson.
It is the first faith-based, upcounty buyback, organized by the D.C. Area Interfaith Gun Violence Prevention Network in partnership with the Montgomery County Sheriff and County State’s Attorney. The interfaith network helped raise more than $26,000 to buy-back the guns.
People can bring unloaded, functioning guns in their cars. For handguns, rifles, and shotguns, participants get a $100 gift card to Giant grocery store. Participants get a $200 gift card to Giant for military assault-style guns and ghost guns. All guns collected during the event will be destroyed and will not be repurposed.
