A community meeting on whether to return Newell Street in Silver Spring to pedestrian-only is set for Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Montgomery County Cultural Arts Center on Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring.
Newell Street in south Silver Spring runs between Eastern Avenue and East-West Highway.
In 2020 during the pandemic, the portion of the street between Kennett Street and East-West Highway was closed to vehicle traffic. That area, adjacent to Acorn Park, was used as an outdoor space during social distancing.
The street has since reopened to traffic.
The county Department of Transportation (MCDOT) studied the street to determine if it should again be closed to traffic and also how to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety there.
MCDOT set Tuesday’s meeting to gather feedback from the community.
A study that includes several alternatives is expected to be completed in early 2024.
