Commuters Should Plan Ahead for Closures, Delays Due to NATO Summit in D.C.

For the first time in 25 years, Washington, D.C., is hosting the 2024 North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Summit. Montgomery County residents planning to commute or travel to D.C. next week should expect significant road and sidewalk closures in the Downtown area.

The affected areas include the Washington Convention Center, Carnegie Library, Mount Vernon Square, Mellon Auditorium and White House Complex.

The D.C. Mayor’s Office announced that public transportation services operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority will continue to operate but may experience detours and delays. Community members are encouraged to plan ahead.

Temporary security measures, such as road/sidewalk closures and installments of anti-scale fencing, will begin in the area on July 8. Official closures around the Mellon Auditorium will start the morning of July 9 and end that evening. Enhanced security measures around the White House complex are effective the afternoon and evening of July 10.

Commuters and residents should also anticipate official closures in the Washington Convention Center, Carnegie Library and Mount Vernon Square area from July 8-11.
