Purple walls and fences were installed around the area of the Brigadier General Charles E. McGee Library in Silver Spring as crews began work on the Purple Line Silver Spring Library Station.
Work consisting of excavation, utility relocations, systems, and trackwork will continue through December on weekdays and weekends from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
According to PurpleLineMD, access to the library and neighboring shops on Bonifant Street will be available with ADA-compliant pedestrian access through Wayne Avenue and Fenton Street. However, walkway patterns could change as construction progresses, so pedestrians are advised to follow any signs posted.
Although construction of the station is expected through 2023, due to delays, the full 16-mile light rail project connecting Bethesda to New Carrollton in Prince George’s County is set to open for service in 2026.
Plans for the Purple Line platform were built into the construction design of the library in 2012, and the building officially opened to the public in 2015. The station, one of two Purple Line stops in Silver Spring, will join the pavilion on the first floor of the library facing Fenton Street with the main building on the third floor.
