The Montgomery County Office of Consumer Protection (OCP) is warning residents about an increase in package tracking scams. The scams involve fraudulent text messages, known as “smishing,” that appear to be from the United States Postal Service (USPS).
Smishing uses fake text messages to trick victims into providing personal or financial information. Scammers often claim there is an issue with a package and include a link to “fix” the problem. These links direct users to fraudulent websites designed to steal sensitive information.
“Scammers are preying on consumers because of the rise in package deliveries, especially during the holidays,” said OCP Director Eric Friedman. “Always verify any claims directly with the delivery service to avoid falling victim to these schemes.”
Examples of the messages are shown below:

OCP recommends these tips to avoid smishing scams:
- Do not click links in unsolicited messages. Verify package issues directly with the shipping company’s official website or customer service.
- Legitimate companies will never ask for personal or financial information via text or email.
- Check your order status independently by visiting the retailer’s website.
- Report suspicious texts to 7726 (SPAM) and delete them from your phone. Notify the shipping company about fraudulent messages.
OCP also encourages residents to listen to its latest podcast episode, Safe and Smart Holiday Shopping. The episode discusses holiday scams, including smishing and package delivery fraud, and offers safety tips for the season.
OCP is located at 100 Maryland Ave., Suite 3600, in Rockville. Walk-in hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. For assistance or to file a consumer complaint, call MC 311 or 240-777-0311, or visit the OCP website.
