The Montgomery County Council’s Education and Culture Committee unanimously recommended $49.5 million above County Executive Marc Elrich’s recommended budget for MCPS on Tuesday.
After four worksessions, the committee reviewing budget requests, the group’s recommendation totaled $3.3 billion, including about $3 billion in tax-supporting funding to best support county public schools and address educational needs, according to Councilmember Kristin Mink.
The committee also approved Elrich’s recommended maintenance of effort budget for Montgomery College for the next fiscal year at $334.7 million, including nearly $150 million in tax-supported funding.
“Education is a people-centered effort, and we must invest in the educators and staff who are working tirelessly to provide a world-class education for every student,” Committee Chair Will Jawando said in a press release.
The committee’s budget recommendations will now be considered by the full council, which is slated to finalize next fiscal year’s operating budget in mid-May.
