Montgomery County Councilmembers introduced legislation Tuesday morning that would expand which public safety officers are eligible for a property tax credit.
The bill is sponsored by Councilmembers Natali Fani-González and Gabe Albornoz. A public hearing is set for Oct. 1.
Currently, only Montgomery County police officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians and correctional officers are eligible for a maximum of $2,500 property tax credit if they live in the county.
Under the proposed amendment, public safety officers employed by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission and other bi-county agencies would be eligible.
The goal is to make it easier to recruit and retain county employees.
“This is an important amendment to the bill,” Albornoz said. “It is a good thing to make sure our law enforcement officers live amongst us.”
