County councilmembers voted Tuesday to remove minimum parking requirements for new housing developments near transit.
They voted unanimously to eliminate parking requirements within a half mile of a Metro or Purple Line station and within a quarter mile of a Bus Rapid Transit station. The Zoning Text Amendment was introduced in November.
“The purpose of this is to make housing cheaper throughout the community by reducing the burdens of parking,” said Councilmember Evan Glass, a lead sponsor.
It costs $70,000-$100,000 to build each underground parking space, council documents cited from reports. The zoning measure is intended to encourage that more housing be built due to more on-site space, and to provide lower-cost housing due to saved costs, according to council documents.
Council President Andrew Friedson, and Councilmembers Glass and Kristin Mink are lead sponsors. All other councilmembers are cosponsors. It becomes effective 20 days after the council’s Tuesday vote.
