Council Reaffirms County Commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion

Montgomery County councilmembers unanimously voted Tuesday to support a resolution affirming their commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion when it comes to housing.

“We know here in Montgomery County, diversity is our strength.” said Councilmember Evan Glass, the resolution’s lead sponsor. He added, “We don’t build walls around Montgomery County. We build housing.”

The resolution states the council’s “resolve to continue to advance policies that promote racial equity in housing, education and economic opportunity.”

It also states all racial covenants in the county are “null, unenforceable and contrary to public policy.”

The goal stated in the resolution ensures “all residents—regardless of race, ethnicity, or national origin—have equal access to housing opportunities and a community free from discrimination.”

In December 2019, the county adopted a bill supporting racial equity.

“At a time when national forces are trying to divide communities based on race, gender and immigration status, Montgomery County remains committed to supporting our beautiful diversity through equitable and inclusive policies,” Glass said.

“The reason Montgomery County is home to four of the ten most diverse places in the United States is because we welcome people from all around the world, regardless of their skin color, where they pray, who they love or how they identify. These are the Montgomery County values that we must continue fighting for.”
