The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center (MCASAC) will participate in the nationwide Clear the Shelters event Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 7–8. During the event, the center will waive adoption fees.
Clear the Shelters is a nationwide pet adoption initiative to help animals find good homes. In past years, the event has led to record numbers of adoptions. During the 2022 event, more than 250 animals of all kinds were adopted.
MCM’s Andrea Sarralde talked with Maria Anselmo, Community Relations Manager of MCASAC, about the shelter and the ‘2022 Clear the Shelters’ event:
The shelter will use an appointment system to reduce wait times during the event. Clear the Shelters appointments are now open. Interested persons may start the process by filling out the adoption questionnaire online at How to Adopt on the MCASAC website. Or, persons may visit the Adoption Center during open hours to start the process in-person. Walk-ins during the event are welcome based on adoption counselor availability.
Process to Adopt During the Clear the Shelters Event
To reduce wait times during this year’s event, the shelter will use an appointment system. Appointments are now open. Interested adopters can start by completing the online questionnaire at How to Adopt on the MCASAC website, or they can visit the center during open hours to begin the process in person. Walk-ins are welcome based on adoption counselor availability, but may be accommodated in case of cancellations or no-shows.
Currently, MCASAC has over 100 animals available for adoption, including dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, snakes, guinea pigs and more. Additional animals become available each week. Visit the MCASAC website to view all animals available for adoption.
Find adoption requirements and details on the MCASAC website. Adoptions are first-come, first-served by appointment. Potential adopters can get the process started online or can walk-in to the shelter during open hours.
Adopters should come prepared to take an animal home at the end of their appointment. Bring a leash and collar for dogs or a carrier for cats and small animals. To ensure as many pets as possible find homes, holds will not be allowed.
MCASAC is located at 7315 Muncaster Mill Road in Derwood. The telephone number is 240.773.5900.
