The County government will be following a holiday schedule for Sunday, Dec. 31, and Monday, Jan. 1, in observance of the New Year’s holiday. Here’s a list of what will be open and closed.
Schedule changes for New Year’s Weekend, Sunday, Dec. 31, and Monday, Jan. 1
- County offices—Closed Jan. 1.
- MC 311—Closes early on Friday, Dec. 29, with hours 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Closed on Dec. 25.
- State offices and courts—Closed Jan. 1.
- State Motor Vehicle Administration offices and Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program stations—Closed Jan. 1.
- Libraries—Closed Jan. 1.
- Alcohol Beverage Services— All stores open regular hours on Dec. 31. Closed Jan. 1.
- Department of Permitting Services—Closed Jan. 1.
- Ride On—On Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, will operate on a Sunday service schedule.
- Ride On Flex and Ride On extRa—On Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, will not be in service.
- Flash—On Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, will operate a Weekends and Holidays schedule for the Orange Route. The Blue Route will not be in service.
- MARC Train—Regularly scheduled Penn Line weekend service on Dec. 30-31. No service on New Years Day, Jan. 1.
- TRiPS Silver Spring commuter store—Open 7 a.m.-4 p.m. on Dec. 31. Closed Jan. 1.
- TRiPS mobile commuter store—Closed Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
- Metrobus—Will operate on a Sunday schedule on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. More details at https://www.wmata.com/schedules/timetables/.
- Metrorail—On New Year’s Eve on Sunday, Dec. 31, will operate on Sunday schedule, with service starting at 7 a.m., but ending at a time to be determined after midnight. - Public Parking Garages, Lots, Curbside Meters—Free on Jan. 1.
- County-provided trash and recycling collections—No collections on Monday, Jan. 1. Collections for the remainder of the week will slide one day, with the final collections on Saturday, Jan. 6.
- Shady Grove Transfer Station and Recycling Center— Closes early at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 31. Closed on Jan. 1.
- Aquatic Centers— Will close at 3 p.m. on Dec. 31. Closed Jan. 1.
- Community Recreation Centers—Closed Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
- Senior Centers—Closed Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

- The Open Parkways program will be extended from Saturday, Dec. 23, through Monday, Jan. 1. During this time, parkways are open to pedestrians and bicyclists and closed to motor vehicles. This impacts: Beach Drive between Connecticut and Knowles Avenue (2.9 miles) from 7 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 30, until 4 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 1; Sligo Creek Parkway between Old Carroll Avenue and Piney Branch Road and between Forest Glen Road and University Boulevard West from 9 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 29, through 4 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 1; Little Falls Parkway between Arlington Road and Dorset Avenue (0.4 miles) will be open 24/7 for recreation and exercise.
