Workshops focused on Black women’s sexual health and wellness are set for Dec. 3 to commemorate World AIDS Day.
The program runs from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Building and includes a free breakfast. The event is co-sponsored by the alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
This year’s World AIDS Day theme, “Breaking the Silence Together: Celebrating Black Women’s Strength in HIV Awareness, Sexual Health and Wellness,” emphasizes the importance of addressing racial disparities in sexual health outcomes. The county’s African American Health Program, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, will offer free on-site HIV testing during the event.
“World AIDS Day reminds us of the progress we have come in addressing the HIV epidemic, but there is still work we need to do to eliminate racial health disparities and health outcomes,” said Executive Marc Elrich. “Black women have faced significant barriers in accessing resources. By bringing attention to this issue, we can empower residents with the tools and information needed to prevent and treat HIV.”

The workshops cover such topics as exploring pleasure as essential to sexual health and overall wellness, benefits of pre-exposure prophylaxis and ways to enhance personal and communal strengths.
