The Montgomery County Council will hold its annual commemoration for Black History Month on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 11:30 a.m. This year’s theme: Black Resistance.
While Black Resistance is the national theme for Black History Month, the Montgomery County commemoration will honor social resistance through faith, education, activism, political representation, and Black fraternities and sororities.
The event will include a proclamation presentation and video interviews with eight local and national Black leaders who have used various forms of resistance to influence community change. Councilmembers Will Jawando, the second Black at-large councilmember, and Laurie-Anne Sayles, the first Black woman councilmember, are among those who will be featured.
Residents can attend the event in person at the Council Office Building or tune in to a live stream on the council’s YouTube and Facebook, which can also be viewed after the event. County Cable Montgomery, Comcast cable channels 996 and 6, RCN channels 1056 and 6, and Verizon channel 30 will also broadcast the commemoration.
Since 2015, the council has held annual commemorations for Black History Month, each with a different theme. Last year, the event focused on Black health and wellness in Montgomery County through interviews with public health professionals in the county and others who have worked in the field.
This year’s Council #BlackHistoryMonth commemoration is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 11:30 a.m. Mark your calendars to tune in on County Cable Montgomery, Facebook or YouTube as we honor Black Resistance.
