Today marks the beginning of Deepavali or Diwali, also known as The Festival of Lights. The five-day Hindu holiday takes place between October and November every year.
Marc Elrich and the Diwali Planning Committee will host the 12th annual Diwali celebration on Friday, Oct. 28 in the Executive Office Building located in Rockville from 6-8 p.m. Space for this event is limited and reservations can be made online here.
“Diwali signifies the beginning of a new year and symbolizes the victory of light over darkness,” Elrich said in a message last week. “Many people marking the holiday will be dressed in colorful, traditional clothing. They may light lamps outside their homes, gather to enjoy large feasts, and exchange gifts.”
Elrich proclaimed Diwali day on Nov. 4 last year. County schools are closed today in recognition of the holiday.
Other Diwali celebrations include back-to-back weekend festivities in Germantown.
