County Firefighter Dies While Working at Fire in Laurel

A Montgomery County firefighter died Saturday night while actively fighting a house fire in Prince George’s County.

The firefighter had a medical emergency while actively fighting the fire and CPR was performed prior to him being taken to Adventist Health Care White Oak Medical Center.

Montgomery County Fire Chief Corey Smedley did not reveal the name of the firefighter, pending notification of family members.

He was 46 years old and a 22-year veteran of the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service and operated out of the Burtonsville Station.

“Because of the investigation, there is not a lot I can say right now,” Smedley said.

“This is a very difficult time for us in tonight in Montgomery County Fire and Rescue,” Smedley said during an evening press conference in front of the hospital.

To other emergency personnel, Smedley said, “We are here for you,” adding, “We will get through this together.”

“We are here around the clock with family members,” Smedley said.

The deceased firefighter’s body will be driven to the state medical examiner’s office Thursday night in a procession with other emergency personnel.

According to Smedley, it is routine for Montgomery County firefighters to perform mutual aid to area fire companies when requested.

“This is indeed a very sad and difficult situation for us,” Elrich said. He said he had met with the family and reassured them that Montgomery County “is going to be there to support them.”

To other emergency personnel, Elrich said, “We stand together.”
