Montgomery County received more than $2.6 million to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at up to 17 locations.

The $2.68 million grant funding is from the Maryland Department of Transportation as part of the Federal Highway Administration’s Carbon Reduction Program, per a release Thursday.

The sites for charging stations would be county-owned locations including parking garages, park-and-ride lots, libraries and community centers.

The county will work with the state transportation department to pick sites for charging stations “that are strategically located to meet the needs of residents and businesses.”

In a written statement, County Executive Marc Elrich said, “We applaud President Biden and Maryland Governor Moore for their leadership in providing the funding to help make the transition to electric vehicle use more widely accessible. This grant is a significant step forward in our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable transportation in Montgomery County. By expanding EV charging accessibility, we are making it easier for residents to adopt electric vehicles and reduce their carbon footprint.”
