County Launches Consumer Protection Podcast

The Montgomery County Office of Consumer Protection (OCP) launched a new podcast that aims to offer up-to-date information on avoiding scams, making informed purchases, and understanding consumer rights.

“Consumer Connection” will be hosted by OCP Investigator Michelle Escobar and each episode will feature expert guests sharing practical advice and tips for consumer empowerment.

The first episode, “Welcome to Consumer Connection,” is available now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Amazon Music. In this introductory episode, Escobar shares her extensive experience in consumer protection, including nine years at OCP and eight years with the State of Maryland.

Escobar expressed her enthusiasm for the podcast’s potential impact, noting that the team at OCP is dedicated to enforcing consumer protection laws and preventing unfair and deceptive business practices.

“Our team works tirelessly to mediate conflicts, investigate complaints, and resolve disputes. This podcast is another step in our commitment to educating the public about their consumer rights,” said Escobar.

Joining her in the first episode is Eric Friedman, the director of Montgomery County’s OCP and a 43-year veteran of the agency. Together, they delve into OCP’s history and evolution, recent changes in the consumer landscape, and emerging issues in the county. Friedman offers insights into how OCP supports consumers facing various challenges.

County Executive Marc Elrich highlighted the importance of the new podcast, noting that it represents a significant step forward in the county’s efforts to protect and educate residents.

“This podcast will help residents stay informed and vigilant, and highlight the outstanding work of the Office of Consumer Protection. I encourage everyone to tune in and take advantage of the valuable information shared by Michelle Escobar and her guests,” said Elrich.

Future episodes will continue to bring important updates and insights on consumer protection topics. The Office of Broadband Programs in the County’s Department of Technology and Enterprise Services (TEBS) is providing technical support for the podcast.

The Office of Consumer Protection is located at 100 Maryland Avenue, Suite 3600, and is open Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
