Montgomery County Public Libraries and the Jewish Council for the Aging Heyman Interages Center (JCA) are celebrating “Read Across America Week” with reading programs at select library branches.
JCA volunteers are paired with children between kindergarten and third grade. The JCA recruited, vetted and trained the volunteers in communication and intergenerational interaction.
A reading session will be held on Saturday March 4 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Gaithersburg Library. Another session will be held at Wheaton Library on Sunday March 5 from 1 to 3 p.m. in Silver Spring.
Children can bring their own book or select one from the library. This is a drop-in program, advanced registration is not needed.
“Getting our young people inspired to read is one of the most important things we can do in providing great educations for our upcoming generations,” said County Executive Marc Elrich in a press release. “Having a reading partner often is the key to making reading fun and interesting.”
