County Offers Free Chromebooks to Bridge Digital Divide

“Montgomery Connects,” Montgomery County’s digital equity program, has distributed over half of the 60,000 laptops it received from a federal grant. The county aims to distribute the remaining 25,000 Chromebooks to low-income families.

Qualified residents can make an appointment to receive a computer on the Montgomery Connects Computer For You webpage. A Montgomery County library card number is required, which can be obtained online. An email address is needed to make an appointment.

For assistance, residents may call the Marylander Online Help Hotline at 301-405-9810, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. or Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Help is available in English, Spanish, and other languages upon request.

There is a limit of one computer per resident. Recipients must be Montgomery County residents, do not need to be U.S. citizens, and must not have already received a computer from the county.

Residents must make an appointment online, certify they do not have access to a computer, and appear in person to pick up the computer.

Montgomery Connects received a Federal Emergency Connectivity Fund grant of $22.7 million to distribute 60,000 Chromebooks. The program is operated by the County’s Department of Technology & Enterprise Business Solutions (TEBS).

Appointments to receive a computer can be made at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/computer.

The county also works with partner non-profits to distribute laptops. Non-profits can contact Montgomery Connects at montgomeryconnects@montgomerycountymd.gov to reserve blocks of appointments for large events.

Each person, including children over age 7, must have an appointment to receive a computer. Residents should bring photo identification and proof of address to their pick-up appointment. If the photo ID lacks an address, a piece of mail or online bill showing the address is required. Appointments are available until 6 or 7 p.m. and on many Saturdays.
