The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, in partnership with the Maryland Living Well Center of Excellence, will offer a free six-week online Diabetes Self-Management Program (DSMP) starting Sept. 12. The program will take place every Thursday from 4 to 6:30 p.m.
Stanford University experts developed the DSMP to help participants manage diabetes both physically and emotionally. The program provides essential skills to lower A1C levels and reduce risks and complications associated with diabetes.
The workshop meets Sept. 12, 19 and 23 and Oct. 3, 10 and 17.
Nearly 30 million Americans have diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In Maryland, 10.5 percent of adults—nearly 500,000 people—have diabetes, and approximately 34 percent (1.6 million) have prediabetes.
Participants will learn how to stay active, make better food choices, solve problems, make decisions, and cope with the challenges of living with diabetes. The workshop covers ways to improve eating habits, increase physical activity, and maintain a healthy weight.
The program complements diabetic medical management services and has demonstrated proven health benefits. Participants will gain the ability to maintain active and fulfilling lifestyles while improving their problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Individuals with diabetes, prediabetes, or those caring for someone with diabetes should register for the DSMP workshop. Register online or contact Duwem Onwubiko at 240-777-1858.
