A new project in Montgomery County will be the largest self-sustaining bus depot in the U.S., according to an announcement from company and county leaders.
Energy-as-a-service company AlphaStruxure and County Executive Marc Elrich announced the project for the county’s Equipment Maintenance and Transit Operation Center (EMTOC) in Rockville. The transit bus depot will be powered by renewable energy and the first on the East Coast to feature on-site green hydrogen production.
Construction will start in the fourth quarter of 2023 and “we look forward to welcoming you to the ribbon-cutting sometime in Q1 of 2025,” said AlphaStruxure CEO Juan Macias. In effect, the depot will reduce CO2 emissions by 4,000 metric tons per year.
The facility will be designed, built, operated and maintained by AlphaStruxure, said County Executive Marc Elrich. There is no recurring maintenance cost to the county. AlphaStruxure will be paid through a fixed commodity rate over 25 years, Elrich said.
Last October, the county and AlphaStruxure partnered to launch the nation’s largest solar bus charging infrastructure project in Silver Spring.
