Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) is currently accepting applications for the 70th Citizen Academy class, which is a 15-week course to explain the various functions of the police department.
The free course is scheduled to begin May 9, meeting on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9:30 p.m. The class is offered three times each year.
Participants will learn about the role of the police officer in their communities.
The Citizen Academy has been in existence since 1994. Classes will be held at the Public Safety Training Academy at 8751 Snouffer School Road in Gaithersburg.

- Canine demonstration
- Collision reconstruction unit
- Conflict negotiations
- Crime lab
- Crime prevention
- Criminal law/search & seizure
- Drug investigation/CDS identification
- DUI/underage drinking
- Emergency communications center
- Emergency response team
- Firearm safety
- Forensic services
- Gangs
- Internal Affairs Division
- Major Crimes
- Maryland traffic law
- Scams and fraud
Applications are being accepted on a first come, first served basis. The class is very popular and with a class limit of 40 participants, there is often a waiting list.
Once the session is full, all other applications will be held for potential enrollment in future academies.
The academy is open to anyone at least 18 years old who either lives or works in Montgomery County. A background check will be completed on all applicants.
To apply, complete the application and mail it to the address listed on the application.
The academy also offers an optional CPR class and a tour of the detention center. Students may also participate in the department’s ride-along program.
