As four officers resign or retire each month, the Montgomery County Police Department hosts an Expedited Hiring Weekend March 26 and March 27. The goal is to beef up recruitment for the August police academy class.
During this weekend, applicants will complete a written exam, oral interview, and background screening in one day. Applicants will also have the opportunity to take a tour of the Montgomery County Public Safety Training Academy.
Anyone interested must apply online at www.joinmcp.com to attend. For information, contact a recruiter at 240- 773- 5300 or mcpd.recruitment@montgomerycountymd.gov.
In January, Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones told county councilmembers, “I think we are at a very critical juncture. We are at a very high level of officers who are eligible for retirement.” He added, “There are a lot of people who don’t want to be in law enforcement.”
Ninety officers left MCPD in 2021—55 retired, 33 resigned, one was terminated and one died, according to Susan Farag, county legislative analyst.
In the past, the attrition rate was 1.5 officers per month. Currently, four leave monthly, she said, adding if that continues, MCPD will be down 223 officers by the end of 2025.
Meanwhile, recruitment is down. Typically it takes 18 months to recruit, hire and train a new officer.
