Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) announced the “Spring 2024 Backyard Food Scraps Compost Bin Truck Sale” pickup event on Saturday, June 22, and Sunday, June 23.
The Recycling and Management Division offers residents an opportunity to purchase the Earth Machine and HotFrog Dual Chamber Tumbler composters at a reduced cost.
The DEP has worked with volunteers to evaluate the compost bins available for purchase, according to a press release. Both compost bins are approved for food-scraping compost, deterring rodents, and aiding in decomposition.
The bulk sale is part of the County’s Climate Action Plan to improve recycling and waste prevention, said County Executive Marc Elrich. The DEP estimates that approximately 89,000 tons of food scraps were disposed of in the county last year. The county aims to achieve the zero-waste goal by promoting at-home food compost options.
“By providing residents with affordable composting bins and information on the benefits of backyard composting, we are empowering the community to take action and contribute to a healthier environment,” said DEP Director Jon Monger.
Reduced-cost compost bins must be purchased online prior to pickup and cannot be purchased at the pickup locations.
Residents can pick up their orders from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 22, at Paint Branch High School, 14121 Old Columbia Pike in Burtonsville; or from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 23, at Walt Whitman High School, 7100 Whittier Blvd in Bethesda.
