The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center (MCASAC) seeks permanent or temporary foster homes for large dogs 40 pounds and more. Recently, capacity at the shelter reached a ‘critical’ point so MCASAC waives adoption fees for the next 50 dogs adopted.
Last year 916 dogs came into the animal center in the first six months. This year the number is 201 greater or 1,117 dogs. According to a statement from MCASAC, animals are not euthanized for space reasons, but that may change if the center continues to operate at this capacity.
“We firmly believe no dog should face euthanasia due to a lack of space in our shelter,” said MCASAC Executive Director Thomas Koeneg. “This means we need your help more than ever because MCASAC’s kennels, like many in the State and Metro D.C. Region, are at capacity.”
The shelter asks anyone able to adopt, or temporarily foster, a large dog to contact them as soon as possible.
Interested residents can start the adoption process online by completing the adoption questionnaire and emailing the required documents. The questionnaire, required documents and more information about the adoption process can be found at the MCASAC website.
Adoptions are done on first-come, first-served availability—by appointment. Walk-in appointments are subject to counselor availability. Adoptions are same-day and animals are not held for adopters as they need to take an animal home at the time of their appointment.
Adopters must be at least 18 years of age.
Visitors interested in adopting a large dog, should bring:
- A driver’s license or other government issued photo ID.
- Bring rabies vaccination certificates for all dogs, cats, or ferrets in your home (if applicable)
- Necessary pet gear (carrier or leash/harness).
All available animals can be seen on MCASAC’s website: View Available Pets.
Correction: The original article stated that potential adopters should bring a copy of their lease showing a pet addendum. It is not necessary to bring this document.
