Montgomery County Councilmembers on Tuesday introduced a resolution to increase solid waste service charges.

In County Executive Marc Elrich’s proposed Fiscal Year 2026 operating budget, he recommended increasing the solid waste charges. The council must approve the charges annually.

If the recommended charges are approved, rates for single family property owners would increase between 16.2% and 31%. The base systems charge paid by property owners via their tax bill is $32 per year.

Multi-family property owners will see increases ranging from 84.2% to 104.9%.

Non-residential customers will be charged 104.9% of the current rate.

Tipping fees charged at the Shady Grove Transfer Station are recommended to remain the same, except in the case of refuse in open top containers. That charge would rise from $84 to $93, or 10.7%.

According to the county code, the solid waste fund covers expenses for the collection of solid waste.

A public hearing is set for April 9.

The council’s Transportation and Environment Committee will review these changes during its Department of Environmental Protection Recycling and Resource Management operating budget in April.

Final action by the council is expected in mid-May.
