County Unemployment is Below Half of National Average

Unemployment in Montgomery County creeped up slightly, to 1.6% in August, which is less than half the national average, according to County Executive Marc Elrich.

In both the previous two months, the rate was 1.5%. The national unemployment rate is 3.8%.

On Tuesday, the county held “a successful” career fair in Silver Spring, Elrich said during his weekly news briefing. 1,000 people had preregistered to attend.

“We were at capacity.”

Some interviews were conducted at the fair, Elrich noted. Those that were qualified will be contacted in 30 days as to the next step.

Elrich, who addressed the media through Zoom which he was in San Francisco to tour solid waste facilities there as well as spend a few days vacationing, said the county is striving to shorten the time between when a person applies for a county job and when they are notifie

The county has about 1,000 full and part time job vacancies it hoped to fill at its second Montgomery County Career Fair and Hiring Expo, which was held at the Silver Spring Civic Center Building at Veterans Plaza.

During the first fair, one in seven attendees received a contingent job offer, according to a news release from county officials.
