The number of people filing for unemployment in Montgomery County during the week ending July 4 remained constant as compared with last week. For the second week in a row, slightly more than 3,500 county residents filed initial claims for unemployment.
The county’s unemployment rate in May was 8.9 percent, which was the most recent figure released by the Maryland Department of Labor. That marks an increase from April, when it was 8.4 percent.
Statewide, the unemployment rate was 9.9 percent in May. The rate was 10.1 percent in April, according to the Maryland DOL.
In Maryland, 65,559 residents filed initial unemployment claims during the week that ended July 4. The previous week, a total of 56,126 Maryland residents filed initial claims.
