Cuts by Department of Education Impact School System

Late Friday afternoon, the Department of Education (DOE) sent letters to all 50 states announcing cuts to funding.

On Monday of this week, the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) held a press briefing and cited Montgomery County as one of the districts most affected.

At the end of the letter the DOE requested justification for the funding saying that might be taken into consideration. The MSDE stated justification was part of the original funding request but they would be resending that information.

MCM contacted Montgomery County Public Schools for a reaction. They indicated they were still assessing the situation.

Meanwhile MSDE has contacted the Maryland Attorney General and will confer with the AG to assess next steps.

The Department also spent the weekend updating the Maryland General Assembly which is currently looking to deal with other budget shortfalls.
