Trevon G. Brox, 28, of Washington, D.C. pleaded guilty Tuesday to attempted second-degree murder for shooting at a Maryland-National Capital Park Police officer Feb. 1, 2022.
Brox faces up to 50 years in prison. He will be sentenced Feb. 26.
“The significance of the charges in this case could not be more poignant as the plea hearing occurred on National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. The State intends to ask the judge to go beyond the sentencing guidelines in this matter and will request the maximum sentence,” said State’s Attorney John McCarthy.
The police officer drove ahead and parked by the community playground and then got out of his vehicle. He then headed on foot toward the townhouses on Buehler Court, where he saw the defendant standing in the front yard of one of the townhouses.
The officer gave a verbal warning for Brox to get down on the ground. When the two were about six to eight feet apart, the defendant pulled out a handgun and pointed it in the direction of the officer, according to the state’s attorney’s office.
The officer dove to his right as the defendant opened fire, missing the officer but striking the rear of a nearby car. Brox then ran behind a row of townhouses but was taken into custody without incident soon after.
Initially, he was charged with transporting a loaded handgun in a vehicle, discharging a handgun creating a serious risk of death or physical injury and possessing a firearm after being convicted of robbery, a crime of violence.
