D.C. Mayor Bowser Announces Crime-Reduction Partnership with Metro

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and General Metro Manager and CEO Randy Clarke announced Wednesday in a press release their new partnership. The release is focused on safety and informed residents about the increase in security that is scheduled for all forms of the Metro.

Here are the new security measures Bowser will implement:

  • Significant police presence of MPD (DC Metropolitan Police Department): “When police are in the community, people feel safer and our officers can respond faster. Hundreds of thousands of people use the Metro every day to move around DC, and now, they can expect to see more MPD officers out during their commutes,” Bowser says.
  • Partnered patrolling at transit stations: MTPD (Metro Transit Police Department) will join MPD at five stations in Washington, D.C. with the highest crime. This security approach will continue through the summer months. “This partnership will allow transit police to ride more buses and trains,” Randy Clarke says.
  • Increased police response time: The Metro will fund the patrols to respond quickly and efficiently, specifically during rush hour times. There will be an increase of 60 percent in terms of police presence, therefore the response times will be faster.

Mayor Bowser emphasized the additional initiatives of the Metro system the program “Work Differently.” Within this initiative, the MTPD has added an extension of professionals that specializes in crisis intervention. The professionals are trained in the many categories of mental health and will provide assistance when crises arise.

Bowser and Clarke will be working to maintain public safety in high-traffic spaces, including on both trains and buses. Their efforts align with the goals of reducing crime and strengthening the community as a collective.
