The Damascus Hornets beat the Northwest Jaguars, 33-28, in a game that came down to the final seconds.
The Damascus defense kept Northwest out of the end zone in a goal-to-go situation with less than a minute to play to preserve the victory. The back and forth game featured six lead changes.
Damascus showcased a strong rushing attack finishing with four rushing touchdowns, including runs of 50 and 56 yards. The Swarmin’ Hornets also had an interception return for a touchdown in the first half.
Northwest scored first on a punt return for a touchdown in the first quarter. From there, the Jaguars’ passing attack led them down the field on three scoring drives but their final drive was halted with seconds to go, securing the win for Damascus.
It was a disappointing loss for a Northwest squad that entered the 2022 season after an 11-2 finish last year. On the other side, it was an avenging win for Damascus who lost their 2021 season opener to Northwest, 26-0. The Hornets will look to build on their 7-4 finish in 2021.
