Sophia Negroponte, 30, was sentenced to 35 years in prison Friday for the stabbing death of Yousuf Rasmussen, 24. A jury had found her guilty of second-degree murder.
The former diplomat’s daughter, who lived in Washington, D.C., was accused of fatally stabbing Rasmussen by slitting his throat with a kitchen knife at a residence in the 400 block of West Montgomery Avenue in Rockville on Feb. 13, 2020.
Rasmussen’s parents spoke both during the sentencing and at a press conference following the hearing.
“Yousuf was a kind and gentle soul, a loving person who brought our family and his many friends great joy in his 24 years of life. We will carry him with us forever,” the parents said in a statement.
“He was an extraordinary person,” Rasmussen’s father said at the news conference. He thanked emergency workers, law enforcement officers, the state’s attorneys office and family and friends who supported them since their son’s death.
According to court documents, when police entered the residence, Negroponte was atop the victim yelling, ‘I’m sorry.’ He was covered in blood. A third person, who was with Negroponte and Rasmussen, said the two were bickering while watching television.
“While nothing can ease the pain caused by this senseless loss of life, we thank Judge McGann for an appropriate prison sentence in this case. Yousuf Rasmussen was a beloved 24-year-old young man who was supported throughout this trial by friends and family, and he will be greatly missed by all who loved him,” said State’s Attorney John McCarthy.
