Work began this month for a day care center at the former site of the Silver Spring Library on Colesville Road.
The Martha B. Gudelsky Child Development Center plans to welcome about 180 children, from birth to five years. CentroNia will operate the licensed early childhood care, education and development facility. Sixteen classrooms are planned.
Work in the parking lot currently is underway. Renovations at the former library building should be completed by next summer. The work also includes a 450-square-foot multipurpose space with a kitchen, which will be available to the general public when not needed by the childhood center.
Three-quarters of the students at the early care programs include families eligible under Federal guidelines for free and reduced lunch.
Montgomery County entered into a long-term lease with the developer this month for the 2.3-acre property. Work on the day care center was approved prior to the pandemic, but the renovations were put on hold.
