Decedent, Officer Identified in Wheaton Fatal Police-Involved Shooting

The Maryland Attorney General’s Office identified a man who was fatally shot by a county police officer in Wheaton and also identified the involved officer.

31-year-old Melvin Omar Chavez-Paz of Wheaton was fatally shot by Cpl. Cody Hobbs, a 12-year veteran assigned to the county police department’s Patrol Services Bureau, per a release Tuesday.

According to initial information from the state Attorney General’s Office, at about 7:45 p.m. Saturday, county police responded to the 3400 block of Janet Road for a reported assault in progress. Officers encountered a man, now identified as Chavez-Paz, in a yard “holding an object” in his hand. Officers shouted commands to “drop the knife” but he did not comply and started crossing the street. One officer, now identified as Hobbs, used his service weapon and shot him. According to county police, Chavez-Paz was approaching Hobbs and victims he allegedly assaulted earlier.

The state Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division continues to investigate.
