One day after State Sen. Ariana Kelly (D-16) shared that she was named executive director of the Commission for Women, Delegate Sara Love announced her desire to fill Kelly’s seat.
“I am excited to announce that I will be putting my name in,” Love posted on social media.
Shortly after that, her fellow District 16 Delegates Marc Korman and Sarah Wolek expressed their strong support, and Kelly said Love had her “complete support.”
Kelly called it “fabulous news!” On social media, she posted, “I’m so glad you are putting your name in! You have always been a tireless advocate for our district and a generous partner. You have knocked all the doors and the voters trust you.”
District 16 covers Bethesda, North Bethesda, Chevy Chase and Potomac.
The Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee is expected to interview candidates for Kelly’s seat. Their choice will then go to Gov. Wes Moore, who makes the appointment.
This procedure has come under fire with some favoring a special election so residents may vote for their favorite candidate.
State Sen. Cheryl Kagan (D-17) sponsored a bill that would require that a special election be held to fill a vacancy.

I am grateful that @SaraLove4MD is seeking to represent D16 in the State Senate. She is a thoughtful, respected, and devoted legislator who will continue to lead on issues that matter to D16 in the State Senate. I wholeheartedly support her. https://t.co/jBGeTWnHX7 pic.twitter.com/1ev9UN8D11
