On Wednesday, Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) announced it will celebrate “Walktober” with the state to promote walking and health throughout the month.
Walking has been Maryland’s official exercise since 2008, and many events and initiatives will help county residents celebrate it.
The county’s first event this month will be “Walk and Roll to School Day” on Wednesday, Oct. 9. Students with a safe route to school are encouraged to walk, roll, or bike that day.
The county then will have its third “walkinar” on Thursday, Oct. 17 to discuss projects aimed at making walking and biking routine activities, rather that one-day events. Residents can register for the free event here.
“Walktober gives us the chance to highlight our commitment to enhancing pedestrian safety and making walking a viable option for more of our residents,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “It’s also a chance to spotlight the county’s more than 250 miles of hiking trails.”
All events are part of the county’s Vision Zero program to make activities such as walking or biking safer for county residents.
