The Montgomery County’s Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will hold its annual Bicycle Donation Drive on Oct. 11 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Rockville, according to a press release.
Bicycles should be in good working condition or need only minor repairs, which the Rockville Bike Hub volunteers will refurbish. Donations by check toward bike repairs will be accepted at the event and donors will receive a receipt. The checks can be made to Rockville Bike Hub. Donations are tax-deductible per the release.
Using the Rockville Terrific Kids program and the MCDOT Bike Match Program, MCDOT will place bikes with children and adults in the county.
County Executive Marc Elrich said, “Bikes can be the important first and last mile connection to public transportation. These bikes make an impact on local residents who would not otherwise be able to afford them. They also promote exercise, are a climate-friendly mode of transportation, and can ease access to transportation options.”
The release said communities can organize bike collections at schools, places of worship or neighborhoods to take the bikes to the event.
MCDOT Director Chris Conklin said, “Since the program began in June 2020, our Bike Match program has received about 1,065 bike requests, and we have placed over 755 donated bikes. However, that still leaves a need for over 300 bikes. We are hoping to be able to collect enough bikes to fulfill all of these requests.”
MCDOT will collect bikes outside the Montgomery County Council Office Building garage at the corner of East Jefferson and Monroe Street, rain or shine.
