The summer months are nearly upon us. More and more people will spend their time outdoors. Some will sunbathe, while others will hike or do other forms of exercise. Unlike the spring when allergies can be a nuisance, the summer months can present other health challenges.
MCM spoke with Dr. Fabian Sandoval, President and CEO of Emerson Clinical Research Institute in Washington D.C., about diseases people can contract if they do not protect themselves properly. They include Lyme disease, West Nile virus and Dengue fever. He also talked about the importance of shielding oneself from the sun’s powerful rays:
Staying Hydrated
Sandoval also says it is important that people stay hydrated in the summer especially if they exercise or spend a lot of time outdoors. He says some of the signs and symptoms of dehydration include dizziness, headaches, and slurred speech.
Up to Date With Vaccines
Covid-19, the flu, and RSV are still present during the summer. Sandoval said it is important for people to get vaccines against those diseases especially if adults are around young children who are not yet protected against those viruses. He also said if people are vaccinated against some of these illnesses, and become sick during the summer, doctors can rule out these diseases as possible causes. This can help doctors focus on other illnesses that may be making a person sick.
