A sculpture of Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast and Silver Spring native Dominique Dawes was unveiled Tuesday at the Silver Spring Recreation and Aquatic Center.
It was exactly 28 years ago to the day when Dawes, part of the “Magnificent Seven” U.S. women’s gymnastics team, won the gold. It was July 23, 1996 in Atlanta.
She has four Olympic medals: gold in the 1996 team event, team bronzes in 1992 and 2000, and an individual bronze in 1996, according to the Olympics.
Now, she runs the Dominique Dawes Gymnastics and Ninja Academy at locations in Rockville and Clarksburg and will be opening a third in Columbia.
