Montgomery County Recreation will collect new and lightly used prom dresses, suits and other accessories through March 15. It’s all part of the second annual Praisner’s Project Prom Dress giveaway.
Residents can bring items to the Marilyn Praisner Community Recreation Center in Burtonsville. The donations will be dry-cleaned before being organized into a boutique held at the recreation center on Saturday, April 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students can browse through the racks and choose an item for free with their student I.D.
WPGC 95.5 FM co-sponsors Praisner’s Project Prom Dress to help ease the financial burden students face ahead of prom. For many students, prom is an unforgettable part of the high school experience. Montgomery County Recreation wants to make sure all students have the opportunity to achieve their dream prom, according to a press release.
Last year’s giveaway event proved very successful with lots of donations and a turnout of about 500 people seeking items, said Monika Hammer, Communications Program Manager and Public Information Officer for Montgomery County Recreation.
The team at the Burtonsville Recreation Center plans to continue holding the giveaway each year, Hammer said, to limit barriers students face and fill a need in the community.
Additional centers across the county will accept donations at the following dates and times:
- Germantown Community Recreation Center, 18905 Kingsview Road, Germantown. Saturday, Feb. 4, and Saturday, Feb. 25, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
- Jane E. Lawton Community Recreation Center, 4301 Willow Lane, Chevy Chase. Saturday, Feb. 4, and Saturday, Feb. 25, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
