This weekend, it’s time to “fall back” as daylight saving time ends. Before going to bed on Saturday night, remember to set your clocks back one hour.
In Maryland and most other states, clocks follow daylight saving time in the spring and return to standard time in the fall. This year, the shift back to standard time occurs at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3, effectively making that hour repeat and giving us a 25-hour day. The switch in spring will “spring forward” again on Sunday, March 10, 2024.
For an easy reminder, remember the phrase “spring forward, fall back” to keep track of which way the clocks change each season.
National Geographic explains daylight saving time in this video:
Local firefighters recommend using this weekend as a reminder to test and replace the batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors. Working smoke alarms and CO detectors double a family’s chance of surviving a home fire or hazardous CO levels. Maryland requires newer models with sealed, 10-year batteries to help ensure consistent protection.
