Election for the next Student Member of the Montgomery County Board of Education (SMOB) will be held April 17.
Chosen out of a field of of eight students, the two finalists are Samantha Ross, a junior at Montgomery Blair, and Praneel Suvarna, a junior at Clarksburg.
The two candidates hoping to become the 47th SMOB were selected by 400 voting middle and high school delegates at the recent nominating convention at Watkins Mill High School.
Ross serves as a member of the Montgomery County Public Schools Well-Being School Safety and Districtwide Wellness Committee and the Social Studies Curriculum Advisory Committee. She is chief of staff for the current SMOB advisory council and served on the Maryland Center for School Safety Student Focus Group.
Ross also is a member of the Montgomery County Regional Student Government Association.
Suvarna is vice president of the Montgomery County Regional Student Government Association and is the junior class president at his school. He has worked with the Student Advisory Mental Health Board and MoCo for Change and is a certified presenter with the Maryland Association of Student Councils.
